DSLR stands for 'Digital Single-Lens Reflex'. A DSLR allows more control over the picture that is captured.
Pros:
-Adaptability(Most allow extension of functionality through support for external accessories such as external flash and microphone)
-Changeable Lens(Lens can be swapped based on the situation and requirement)
-Image Quality(Due to large sensor sizes DSLRs can take pictures with little to no noise)
-Sensitivity(DSLRs are much more sensitive to light making them good for low light photography)
-Control(DSLRs provide a lot of control over what happens before, during and after you take a picture)
-Build(Most DSLRs have great build quality and should last a long time)
Cons:
-Expensive(most entry level DSLRs are at least $500 and additional accessories could increase that figure to $1000)
-Big and Heavy(DSLRs take up a lot of space and could be impractical in certain situation, such as a trek)

Is it for you?
A DSLR is a great tool to capture the moment exactly the way you want to. It may seem complicated at first but spending some time with it is a good idea and can be appreciated later on. If it is financially feasible then a DSLR is going to be a worthwhile investment in the long run. If the camera is required for professional purposes then a DSLR is strongly recommended.
